Inspiration and Revitalization of Dreams

I have been privileged to attend several graduations this year.  I always enjoy hearing commencement speeches because it touches my heart and inspires me to live a better life.  Trying not to think about the hot sun, hard seats and long lists of names, I focus instead on the happy faces, the proud parents and the excitement for the future.

At one graduation Placido Domingo, the opera singer and director, was the commencement speaker.  He stressed the importance of families and how each family member should make an effort to stay connected.  With busy schedules, computers and multiple distractions, family members are often separated - even those living under the same roof.  He encouraged learning more than one language to help connect you to the world at large.  Learning another language broadens your sphere of influence, increases your ability to communicate and makes you more valuable.

Several student speakers related how they had matured and expanded their views of themselves.  One girl talked about how a bad case of acne proved to be a turning point for her.  She changed from being a self-centered, materialistic girl to a person who could see other qualities such as teamwork, leadership, and helping others were more important than good looks and being popular.  One young man talked about transforming from a disruptive, unruly child into someone who sees the importance of having goals, developing skills and using them to make this a better world.

Many graduates are unsure of their future but they all show a glimmer of excitement and hope for great things to come.  Everyone shares the joy of the moment and contemplates the prospects for a brighter future.  We all win when we have competent, trained people in our midst.  When our old dreams are restored or new ones pop into view, we move into a new realm of greater productivity, becoming more future oriented and focusing on making this a better world.

Even if you don’t have an opportunity to attend a graduation, find a recent graduate, give congratulations and ask what the future holds.  Sometimes, just listening to someone else’s excitement and hopes for the future sparks an ember still smoldering inside us.  Have you accomplished all of your goals?  What plans do you still have that will lead to a better life?  How can you help the next generation?   What would you like to say about how you made a difference in this world? As for me, I think it’s never too late to make a difference.  Get inspired!
