Magnetic Field Energy: Using Magnets as Treatment for a Variety of Health Concerns

For many centuries, magnets have been used for healing. Even Cleopatra reputedly wore magnets for health. Reputable physical therapists endorse using magnets as an effective treatment tool.

Research studies document physical effects of magnetic field energy including:
• muscle relaxation
• increased energy level
• improved sleep
• increased local circulation
• rapid swelling reduction
• increased strength/endurance
• enhanced healing/remodeling of bone and soft tissues
• reduction of spasticity
• pain relief

According to Kathie Bell, Physical Therapist, “All living cells are designed to operate optimally against the backdrop of the earth’s and man’s own natural magnetic fields, which support the biorhythmic balance of all living things. When cells are unable to operate optimally, pain, discomfort and disease result.” The first astronauts got space sick being away from earth’s magnetic field.  Now magnetic fields are included in all manned spacecraft.

Neurological Aspects: Healthy nerves rest quietly unless provoked to a certain level. Emotional stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition and toxins can lower the level of this “provocation point” resulting in pain, irritation, and lower tolerance. Proponents believe magnetic fields may prevent lowering of the nerve’s “provocation point.”  Others believe the magnetic field helps return the body’s tissues to a normal, negative charge following trauma.

Circulatory Aspects: Under ideal conditions the body’s cells are bathed in fluid providing nutrients and carrying off waste products.  Blockage in this flow causes the cells to bathe in their own waste.  When applying a magnetic field to blood vessels, the positively charged particles (potassium and sodium) are attracted to the negative pole and repelled by the positive resulting in improved fluid movement within the vessel.

All magnets are not equal, however. The strength of the magnetic field force is measured in gauss. The FDA considers magnets under 1,000 gauss to be harmless and doesn’t regulate them.  Some magnets are positive, some negative and others bipolar (having both positive and negative poles). Some are made with very durable rare earth metals lasting a long time. Synthetic magnets, such as those made of ceramic, may last only a few years. One very effective magnet design consists of a fine checkerboard pattern of positive and negative fields.

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machines use high magnetic force (40,000-50,000 gauss) to take detailed “pictures” of the body’s internal structure to find tumors and disease without surgery.  Bone stimulators using low frequency electromagnetic fields have been used to help with non-healing fractures, but only in very supervised conditions. Electricity, however, cannot penetrate bone.  By contrast, static magnetic fields penetrate the body as if it were air and provide a very similar effect.

There seem to be few side effects, most of which can be remedied easily with guidance from someone knowledgeable in use of magnets.
